Anecdotes from a Modern Mom

 
This morning we were up and at 'em early, as usual, and yet I was still in my pajamas at 11 am. Between cleaning up smoothie that spilled all over the floor and nursing a bonk to the head, not to mention all the usual feeding and cleaning (for the kids too), who has time to get dressed? Just another day in the trenches. And we were still late for the preschool party at 12:30.

You know how, with kids, just as soon as you’ve figured out how to deal with a certain phase or problem—sleeping through the night, teething, temper tantrums, separation anxiety, whatever—that stage is done with and you’re onto the next issue? I’m kind of feeling like that with my entire life right now, only I’m not sure I’m actually coming to any conclusions. Instead, I’m feeling spread way too thin and that I’m failing miserably on all fronts.

I had the good fortune of spending the evening with a group of moms who are attending a writing group—more on that in a future blog posting—and once again I was reminded of the incredible sense of sisterhood that forms almost instantly among moms. Whether talking about sex (or lack thereof) or the sheer chaos that is toddlerhood, women who were strangers one minute become fast friends simply through the shared bonds of parenting. I wish my husband could experience the same kind of kinship with his male friends.
